about

Under the big top, the sound takes hold of you immediately: Holtwick's distorted yet melodic guitar and Vadun's urgent drumming, anchored by Stecki's solid, driving bass. Then there are Holtwick's vocals; sometimes loud and gravelly; sometimes low and sweet; always honest and a perfect fit for the music.

Lyrically, "Circus" pulls you in with takes on loneliness ("Laika"), loss (the title track), alienation ("3000 Miles"), and all that's just out of reach ("Married or a Lesbian"). From there, the listener sees through the eyes of the protagonist ("Mustache Man") and the paramour ("Hipster Girlfriend"). And who can't relate to wanting the dream girl ("Marilyn and Joe"), taking on the world together with her ("California"), and coping with the inevitable unhappy ending ("Her Eyes")?

The VHS "Circus" has come to town and it's as exhilarating as the flying trapeze. Don't miss it.
